The Project
Through Adobe Illustrator and Adobe After Effects, I created a 3 minute motion graphic music lyric video. I used the process of typography as it is a popular artform of conveying lyrics. I chose the song ‘God Only Knows’ by the Beach Boys as it stood out to me as a great love ballad. The narrative of my project was brought by the fonts, animations, colours and motions I used. To accentuate the idea of love, positivity, togetherness and happiness, I used a bold and bright colour scheme. Evidently, many of the colours correnspond with the rainbow meaning they symbolise peace and one with nature and love.
Influence
Influence for my project lied within previous music and lyrical videos. I researched numerous lyrical videos that presented kinetic typography and animation. I further used them as inspiration for the way in presented my graphic designs, effects and motions. The main inspiration for my piece is the ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’ lyric video made in 2013. The video captures multiple fonts, different movements and most importantly vector graphics. To help benefit my skills in creating a professional looking lyric video. I used various tutorials provided by Adobe After Effects and Youtube that advanced my basic skills and developed more efficiently.
Colour Influence
When focusing on the colour palette for my piece, I was highly influenced by a range of work on the theme of 1960’s California. This included posters of places such as California and San Francisco from the 1960’s itself. I personally love the mix of burgundy, orange and yellow colour scheme as it represents the beautiful essence, vibrancy and warmth of California, where the Beach Boys are seemingly from. Furthermore, the posters used the technique of creating sharp colours with a thick black outline to define the edge of the shape. I find this art form to be fascinating and visually unique.
Iconography
In terms of Iconography, I used vector graphics hand drawn by myself to illustrate certain themes and replace particular words within the lyric video. The idea of replacing lyrics with vector graphics that symbolise the word is a great way to cut down on busyness within the frame. For example, I replace the word ‘Love’ with evidently a heart symbol that represented the image of love.
